Google Search Parameters

Google refers to these as search operators. When analyzing a site, we typically like to see all of the results available. In some cases, we need to know specific information about pages on a site. For example, is the latest pdf file showing up? If not, why? So, this section will help you to find parameters available to help specify your search goals.

Specific keywords
In addition to typical searches, Google allows you to place different keywords followed by the ":" to focus your search. Below are the keywords available.

Title Searches
  • allintitle - Restrict your search results for a sites with specific phrases in the title. For example, if I wanted to search for all results with "Child's Play Technologies", I would type in "allintitle:Child's Play Technologies" into the Google search box.
  • intitle - Restrict your search results for a sites with specific keywords in the title. For example, if I wanted to search for all results with "Child", I would type in "intitle:Child" into the Google search box.

URL Searches
  • allinurl - Restrict your search results for url's with specific keywords in the url. For example, if I wanted to search for all results with "Childs play", I would type in "allinurl:Childs play" into the Google search box.
  • inurl - Restrict your search results for a url with a specific keyword in the url. For example, if I wanted to search for all results with "Childs play", I would type in "inurl:Childs" into the Google search box.

Cache Searches
  • cache - In addition to your original search, you can narrow your search to cached page results for a site. For example, if I wanted to search for all cached results of "search" on http://www.childsplaytech.com, I would type in "search cache:www.childsplaytech.com" into the Google search box.

Information on a Page Searches
  • info - This parameter shows you what information is available for a site or page. For example, if I wanted to information on http://www.childsplaytech.com, I would type in "info:www.childsplaytech.com" into the Google search box. Note, after you run this search, other options for narrowing your results are available at the bottom of the page.

Sites that link to you
  • link - In addition to your original search, you can narrow your search to pages linked to your site. For example, if I wanted to search for all linked results to http://www.childsplaytech.com, I would type in "link:www.childsplaytech.com" into the Google search box. This is an excellent way to see who is linking to your site.

Related sites
  • related - Find results that are similar to a specific web page. For example, if I wanted to search for all similar results for the homepage of Child's Play Technologies, I would type in "related:www.childsplaytech.com" into the Google search box. This is an excellent way to see competition and how your site is understood by Google.

Specific site searches
  • site - In addition to your original search, you can narrow your search to a specific file type. For example, if I wanted to search for all instances of "search" on http://www.childsplaytech.com, I would type in "search site:www.childsplaytech.com" into the Google search box.

Stock searches
  • stocks - Would you just like to know the stock quote? For example, if I wanted to search for a stock quote for "BVSN", I would type in "stocks:BVSN" into the Google search box. Note, you can enter multiple stock ticker symbols by separating them with a space.
  • stock - Would you just like to know information about a stock? For example, if I wanted to search for a stock information on "BVSN", I would type in "stock:BVSN" into the Google search box. Note, you can enter multiple stock ticker symbols by separating them with a space.

Specific file type searches
  • filetype - Narrow your search by different filetypes (PostScript ps, PDF, MS Word doc, MS Excel xls, MS Powerpoint ppt, Rich Text Format rtf). For example, if I wanted to search for all pdf's with the keyword "search", I would type in "search filtype:pdf" into the Google search box.



Create your own Google Search
Enter in the parameters you wish to use. Click the add button. When you are ready, click the search button.

related What sites are related to this page?
site Restrict my search to this site.

stock I want stock information
filetype I want this filetype only. (pdf, ps, doc, xls, ppt, rtf)
