How to Choose a Domain Name

Summary
For those of you unfamiliar with domain names, a domain name is the internet address of your web site. As an example, our domain name is childsplaytech.

In order to make choosing a name easier, take a piece of paper and write down some domain names. Read through the tips below and fine tune your names. By the end of this document you should be able to choose the perfect name for your domain.

Choose several alternatives for domain names
We suggest creating a list of at least 5. Take the names and ask your friends their opinions. Chances are, if your friends can't remember your domain name, no one else will.

Your domain name should be your company name
For example, our company name is Child's Play Technologies, so we chose childsplaytech.

Your domain name should be your product name
If you are selling a product, you want people to easily guess the domain name. For example, if you sell widgets, you should name your site widgets.com.

Keep your domain name a reasonable length
The limit is 67 characters. People typically don't want to type in too much, this also leads to typographical errors. For example, if we chose childsplaytechnologies, there is a higher potential for typographical errors typing technologies. Keep in mind that your stationary must also use this domain name.

Remember your email addresses will also have this domain name
If your email addresses are long, as well as your domain name, it can visibly be unappealing. For example, johndoe@thisisthegreatestwebsiteever.com seems rather long.

Don't use hyphenated names
People are not used to using the hyphens and they are also hard to read on some stationary. Some can't tell if the hyphen is an underline. Don't take a chance on leading your customers to someone else's site. We experienced this with the domain name joe-bailey.com.

Create domain names that will produce good search results
For example, if you search for widgets, your widget.com web site will typically appear in search engine results.

You shouldn't have to pay a lot for your domain name
We offer this service for $19 a year for .com, .net, and .org domain extensions.
